Local Notes |
"Unlimited Visibility: A History of the Washington State School for the Blind" is much more than a dry listing of names and dates. We try, through archived materials and remembrances of alumni, teachers and friends, to put a human face to the issue of preparing the blind and visually impaired for life in the "real world." Along the way we meet inspiring folks such as Robert Irwin, the first graduate of what was then the "School for Defective Youth," who worked his way through college hawking cigars and went on to become a national and world leader in the education of the blind. Or Christy Gilbrough, a deaf and blind student who hasn't let her limitations keep her from holding down a job and pursuing learning even at the age of 66. And then there's the fellow who stranded a donkey on the roof of a school building in retaliation for being called a jackass by the superintendent.
